PostDoc or PhD Position (RT2 – Migrations studies)

The ERC Advanced Grant ‘The Hyksos Enigma’ at the Host Institution the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) − Institute for Oriental and European Archaeology (OREA) is offering a PostDoc or PhD position for Research Track 2 (Migration Studies). This position is funded by the European Research Council (ERC) for 2 years (PostDoc 100%) or 3 years (PhD 100%). Salary: standard FWF personnel rates.

Project Background: This project seeks to shed light on a very obscure and little understood part in Egyptian history, the so called Hyksos Period and its prelude (c. 1750-1530 BC), during which Egypt was confronted with two heretofore unparalleled phenomena: an influx of a substantial foreign population and – probably as a result – the rule of a foreign dynasty over large parts of Egypt

Key areas of responsibility

  • Phenomenological studies on migration from the Levant to Egypt from late prehistory and onwards to explain the causality and ways of immigration (by land or by sea) of the population behind the Hyksos phenomenon according to possible parallels in previous periods – determine the timing, the factors and ways of immigration.
  • Research on the triggers of migration by compiling a climatic history of the region during the 2nd millennium BC with the help of available paleoclimatic data and pollen profiles in Asia Minor, Syria and in the Jordan valley together with dated lake levels of Lake Kinneret, the Dead Sea and the evidence from speleotherms in the Soreq Cave.
  • To identify the mechanisms through which the Hyksos came to power, to reconstruct the functioning of their rule, the spatial structure of their kingdom and the nature of its internal & external relations.

Requirements

  • Master or PhD in Egyptology or a closely related field.
  • Experience in the theoretical background for migration studies.
  • Expertise in Egyptological and Ancient Near Eastern texts.
  • Solid archaeological background.
